Reporting from Pine Mountain Valley, GA;Tour de Georgia kicked off Tuesday with Austen Hutto and Anna Hancock's visit to the set of Extreme Makeover Home Edition. The William's family (Jeremy, Jennifer, Josie, and Jacob) of Pine Mountain Valley, GA have been selected to be the Finale house for the 2010 season. At birth the son Jacob was diagnosed with Spina Bifida(a birth defect in which the backbone and spinal cord do not close before birth), and then some years after, the father Jeremy was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease(a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement).
Now, the home Jeremy and Jennifer bought thirteen years ago is falling apart around them. Two of the main issues was mold in the wall from a leaking air conditioner and the small space for the two disabled family members. ABC in connection with Palm Harbor Homes and Nationwide Homes, generous donators, and hundreds of voulunteers have pulled together to make this project possible. To be more exact, the president of Nationwide Homes told us more than two thousand people signed up. He went on to say, "This is an honor for us to do...their story has made a great impact on me." Thirty of the company's employees, from fourteen states, are donating their time on site.
The house will be the largest modular home the company has ever built (roughly 4,100 square feet). At the time of our visit, the east hallway and both the son and daughter's bedrooms had been installed. Also, the foundation for the rest of the home was being completed. Work continues around the clock as the hundreds of volunteers change in and out. The revealing of the new house to the family will be on Saturday morning.
The "real" family from the movie Blind Side made an appearance on Monday; and while we were at the constuction site, the rumor was Sandra Bullock was supposed to be on her way.
